Ashiko Drum Information

The ashiko is a conical shaped drum made from either a solid hollowed out tree trunk or alternatively a stave design which involves many small pieces of wood shaped and glued together to form a circle. Normally headed with heavier type skins such as cow, deer, elk etcetc which allows the user to get a warm deeper tone but can also be fitted with goatskins for a more responsive djembe type sound. Like the djembe, the skins on the ashiko are attached and tuned using an intricate rope weaving technique. Our ashikos are 100% made from scratch right here in Stratford, Ontario. All our wood, steel, rope and animal skins are purchased from local family-based businesses. The drumshells are cut using a tablesaw and then turned and sanded by hand on a woodlathe. The finishes are all applied by hand and each shell is inspected numerous times for flaw's. The drumrings are bent by hand using a hoop roller and then welded and inspected for strength. The skins are stretched first between the beams of our barn and then the entire piece is inspected for holes and other defects. At this point approipraite size circles are cut out of the skins. The skins are then soaked again in a mild solution of bleach and soap before being mounted onto the drums with our Canadian made drumropes. After the skin has dried we will tune the drum 2-3 times to take out the stretch before selling to our valued customers.
